Classifications and Competition Format
Para-archery at the Paralympics is divided into two main classes:
- W1 Class: This class includes athletes with severe impairments in muscle strength, coordination, or range of movement and always compete in wheelchairs. They use bows restricted to 45 lbs in draw weight without magnifying sight.
- Open Class: This class includes those who can also compete in a wheelchair, standing, or leaning on a stool. They are characterized by having limited movement in their trunk and limbs but normal arm function or balance problems.
Competitions start with a ranking round in which each archer shoots 72 arrows at 50m or 70m. In the head-to-head elimination rounds, athletes shoot three arrows per end over five ends.
