Sumit Antil’s journey from a small village in Haryana to being world-acclaimed in javelin throwing at the Paralympics is one of resilience and determination coupled with extraordinary talent. Early Life and Aspirations

Born on June 7th, 1998, to a lower-middle-class family in Khewra village of Sonipat district in Haryana, Sumit Antil grew up seeing his father, who was posted as a Junior Warrant Officer in the Indian Air Force, die when he was only seven years old. Since the early tragedy struck him in life, Sumit found solace in sports, particularly wrestling. He idolized Yogeshwar Dutt, the 2012 London Olympics bronze medalist, and wanted to emulate him.

 

Life-Altering Accident

The unwritten and unpleasant chapter of Sumit’s life turned serious on 5th January 2015 when, during his motorcycle ride, he met with a fatal accident on the way back from a tuition class. As a result of the accident, his left leg was amputated below the knee. This mishap shattered Sumit’s dream of being a wrestler. But this indomitable spirit of his turned out to be a boon in seeking new horizons in sports.

 

Introduction to Para Athletics

It was during his B.Com at Ramjas College, Delhi University that Sumit was initiated into para athletics by Rajkumar, another para-athlete. He started practicing with coach Nitin Jaiswal in 2017 and soon showed immense potential for the javelin throw. Sumit started to compete in nationals and international events, and soon enough his hard work coupled with his innate talent paid dividends.

 

The breakthrough came in 2019 when Sumit broke a world record in the F64 category in Italy in the World Para Athletics Grand Prix and won the silver medal . He continued this winning streak by winning yet another silver at the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai that same year. His performance in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics was nothing short of spectacular. Sumit won gold with a world record throw of 68.55 meters, rewriting the record three times during the final.

 

Dominance in Para Javelin

Sumit remained the king in para javelin, securing gold medals at the World Championships in Paris (2023) and Kobe (2024), and the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou (2022), with a new world record of 73.29 meters. Once again, he repeated his magic in the 2024 Paris Paralympics, achieving gold as he threw at a Paralympic record of 70.59 meters.

 

Training and Preparation

The toil and labor put in by Sumit, coupled with the belief instilled in him by the Paralympic Committee of India and other sporting bodies, have yielded rich dividends. He was put through a series of grueling training camps with emphasis on enhancing his technique, improving his physical strength, and reinforcing his mental toughness. His training for the Paralympics involved professional coaches and sports psychologists.

 

Sumit has had a tough journey. Shortage and scarcity of special training facilities and international competitions always stayed as his opponents. But then, his will to do best and support from family, coaches, and sponsors never let him down1. His is a story of perseverance and the human spirit.
