Red Fort Blast: Red Fort Closed for Three Days After Tragedy

A significant explosion occurred on Monday night near Delhi’s famous Red Fort. It killed eight people and injured several others. This created a national security alert. The blast, which took place about 5 meters from the Fort, happened at 6:52 PM local time (13:22 GMT) beside a car that was at a red signal when it detonated. This shaked one of the most popular tourist and commercial destinations in India.

Officials investigating the cause, said “we’re considering every option, not ruling anything out at this point,” in regard to the event. They stated multiple agency teams are responding. The explosion took place only meters from Fod Fort, a 17th-century heritage tourist attraction.

The forensic teams are on scene, collecting samples. The Forensic Science Laboratory is analyzing the samples for supposed explosives. There has been no discovery of shrapnel as of yet indicates DCP Raja Banthia. He also added, “We can tell you what the material is in a day or two.”

Red Fort Closed to Public for Three Days

In the wake of the explosion, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has directed the closure of the Red Fort for three days. It is to prevent large crowds around the building during the ongoing investigation.

High-Level Security Meeting to be Discussed

On Tuesday at 11:00 AM IST (05:30 GMT), Home Minister Amit Shah will chair a high-level security review focus meeting. It is expected that the Home Secretary Govind Mohan, the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The Commissioner of Delhi Police will also be in attendance.

Also, the officials will likely be discussing initial findings, possible motive and security arrangements across the country. Shah viewed the site of the explosion late Monday evening. He noted that “every effort will be made” to find those responsible.

Case Registered Under Anti-Terrorism Law

The Delhi police have announced that a case has been filled under not only the Explosives Act, but the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) — India’s anti-terror law.

The purpose is not clear, but the UAPA indicates that authorities perceived this explosion as a potential act of terrorism.

Raja Banthia, Deputy Commissioner, stated, “We are still at an initial stage of investigation. We will see if we can establish that until we have the evidence”. He reported that experts have been called in teams from NSG and FSLs to assist with the evidence.

Security Ramp Up Across the Country

Security has been ramped up in Delhi and other metropolitan areas due to this explosion. More police patrols were added in transportation centers, shopping areas, and elsewhere. Other states, including Maharashtra and Mumbai ramped up security.

Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister, expressed that he is sad for the families of the victims, and offered the families assurance that the government is “keeping close watch on the situation,” and will do everything possible to protect the public.
