Anubhav Sinha Interview

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha praised superstar Shah Rukh Khan. It was for the significant and nuanced change he has brought about in Bollywood’s on-screen and off-screen culture with his career to date.

In a recent interview, Anubhav Sinha discussed the effects that cinema (the films that we watch) can have on our culture. Specifically how an actor can change people’s behaviour in ways that often surprise them as a result of their performances.

Anubhav’s comments have made a significant impact on trending news today. People have started to discuss how movies impact culture beyond just box office revenue.

Movie’s Ability to Create Change

Anubhav Sinha believes that the changes resulting from movies and their culture take time to be fully recognised. He is known for his socially conscious films such as Mulk, Thappad and Bheed,

When asked whether or not movies really create change, Anubhav responded. He stated that while the impact may not always be immediately recognised, continuous positive actions (in filmmaking and by role models) will have a long-term effect on viewers.

‘Before Him, I Never Saw a Hero Do That’

“I have never seen a Hero take action prior to him,” he said of Shah Rukh Khan. “That action was small, but it was very significant.”

He recalled that prior to Shah Rukh’s emergence as a megastar. It was relatively rare for male leads to descend steps to assist female lead actors. “That ambitious behaviour translated into a norm,” he said. Sinha pointed out that Shah Rukh’s continued demonstrations of chivalry such as opening doors and assisting women during public appearances gradually influenced many within the industry.

The director has stated that the actor is “solely responsible” for normalising such behaviours in Bollywood. Thus turning them into a cultural standard, as opposed to an exception.

Beyond On-Screen Romance

Shah Rukh Khan’s actions have gone well beyond just red carpet events. In 2018, he drew national attention when he decided to place his female co-stars at the top of the film credits. He honoured them for their work. Such a decision was widely embraced and considered progressive in an industry. Industry is frequently accused of focusing on male-centric credits.

Sinha believes that these actions, however unintentional, engender positive social change. “Continue to act the right way,” he advised. Also, noting that changes occur in many ways, emphasising the impact of role models on everyday behaviour.

Their Collaboration in Ra.One

The relationship between Anubhav Sinha and Shah Rukh Khan is a partnership that created the film Ra.One. The sci-fi project, featuring Arjun Rampal and Kareena Kapoor, was not a commercial hit when released. It developed a strong follower base over time, especially for its innovative storytelling and exceptional special effects.

Anubhav Sinha’s latest film Assi deals with a rape victim’s recovery from her trauma, as well as her lawyer’s fight for justice. Assi stars Taapsee Pannu and Kani Kusruti, with an ensemble cast including Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Kumud Mishra, Supriya Pathak, and Manoj Pahwa, as well as cameos from Naseeruddin Shah and Divya Dutta.

Anubhav Sinha’s comments at a recent event about the significance of cinema in our culture coincide with our current social constructs and suggest how even small gestures by well-known members of society can have a major impact on creating long-lasting cultural change.
