Avni Lekhara: A Source of Inspiration and Success in Para Shooting
Avni Lekhara- determination and the will to win are the words that this name has come to spell, after she made news again by winning her second gold in a row at the Paris Paralympics 2024. The stories of her accident changing her to a Paralympic Champion are representative of an unconquerable spirit that cannot be drawn from takeoff and a determination that cannot be led.
Early Life and Challenges
Avni was born on November 8, 2001, in Jaipur, Rajasthan. After she turned eleven, her life made a U-turn, after she found herself involved in a car accident which paralyzed her from her waist down. In spite of this extreme physical and emotional challenge, Avni found her solace and pace in shooting, motivated by the autobiography of Olympic gold medalist, Abhinav Bindra.
Rise to Prominence
Avni began para shooting in 2015 and got right to the top. She was able to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics and wasted no time doing so. Only 19 years old, she made history winning a gold medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 with a new Paralympic record score of 249.6. She won bronze in Women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions SH1, making her the first Indian woman to win multiple medals at one Paralympic Games. Paris Paralympics 2024: Inching Her Way into History Books. Lee shot the last round with a 6.8, which provided a glimmer of hope for Avni, who shot the ideal 10.5, which gave Avni the gold medal4.
