The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reportedly requested the government to dissolve a five-member committee. It was put into place to investigate allegations of misconduct in the elections for the BCB board of directors. This is scheduled to be held in 2026. It is believed that the BCB is concerned that the investigation may lead to action by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The NSC Investigating Committee is investigating allegations. There was manipulation during the elections and that multiple members of the BCB (including the then-president) abused their power to interfere with this election. Also, the committee was appointed on or around March 11, 2020. It is headed by former appellate court judge AKM Asaduzzaman. The committee members are from multiple sectors and are all well-respected professionals.
As a result of the elections, Aminul Islam became the new president of the BCB. The BCB contends that the ongoing investigation will be perceived as the government’s interference in the running of cricket, something the ICC strictly prohibits.
Tamim Iqbal Has Intensified the Controversy
The controversy has intensified as former captain Tamim Iqbal has expressed concerns regarding transparency in the elections. They have called for an independent investigation. Iqbal said that most cricket clubs in Dhaka support an investigation into the elections.
Iqbal had previously withdrawn his name from consideration for the presidency for fear of government intervention in the elections.
The position of the current board has brought the validity of the board into greater public attention.
Concern Over Previous ICC Penalities and Governing Body Overreach
The BCB’s concern over their governing body is warranted. The ICC has previously taken drastic actions against its board. As there are examples that show that too many board members have not followed governing rules. For instance, Sri Lanka’s governing body was penalised by the ICC due to interference by the government in 2023. The USA Cricket governed body was penalised for improper governance occurred in 2025.
These actions have made the BCB wary of how the ICC would view any outside governance actions. As they could jeopardise Bangladesh’s existence in global cricket competition.
BCB’s Intent to Seek a Solution Without Escalating Tensions
As serious as the BCB issued has been, they have not yet escalated their concerns with the ICC. Instead, the BCB has asked for an internal review by their governing body – the National Sports Council – to resolve their issue.
In addition, the BCB is focused on preserving ‘independence and stability’ in Bangladesh cricket. Also, being aware of the negative impact if the situation has gotten to that point of concern globally.
Allegations of Significant Gutting of Bangladesh Cricket
The BCB believes their issue is more extensive than just the current management committee — that is, rather, the base level issues on governance, integrity and level of oversight are what need to be resolved, as well as if that all fits into the governance model for cricket in Bangladesh.
As this dispute progresses, it remains a leading topic in sports news headlines today, with the potential to greatly influence the future of cricket governance in Bangladesh.
