Rohan Chandra Bhat, a 33-year-old from Bengaluru, was arrested. It was for allegedly stabbing his retired Navy captain father, Naveen Chandra Bhat (60), and dentist mother, Dr. Shyamala Bhat (55), at their Vignan Nagar home near HAL township on Wednesday morning. This after a heated argument.

The attack is said to have escalated at around 8 a.m. Rohan reportedly stabbed both parents multiple times. Neighbors heard the commotion and rushed to the Bhat villa to take the injured couple to Manipal Hospital on Old Airport Road. There, they were declared dead upon arrival.

A local physician, Dr. Madhavi Nair, filed a complaint with HAL police.

Rohan Used to Work in America

According to police sources, Rohan had previously worked in the U.S. as a software engineer but returned to India about three years ago. The exact details of Rohan’s foreign ventures are unclear. But various officials have indicated he was conducting startup projects on his own and was active on social media channels.

Law enforcement believes that money pressure may have been a factor when Rohan attacked his parent(s). Reports indicate that Rohan was having a difficult time raising capital for his business projects. He has repeatedly asked his parents for money.

When Rohan’s parents allegedly told him they could not meet his monetary requests, arguments erupted on several occasions leading up to Rohan moving into a rented apartment in Varthur due to ongoing disputes with his family.

Arresting Circumstances

According to police reports, Rohan went to his parents’ villa on the evening of the first day after he was shot. He requested money again. The argument spiraled out of control by the morning of the third day, resulting in the fatal assault.

After the police had Rohan in custody, he was brought before a judge. More interviews with Rohan are expected to occur soon. His sister, who lives in the US, will be travelling to Bengaluru shortly. Rohan’s remains have been transported to Bowring Hospital. There an autopsy will be performed once his sister arrives in Bengaluru.

An ongoing investigation is underway, with police working to establish a complete timeline of events as well as any contributing factors leading up to the incident. It included identifying any mental health issues. The police have indicated that they are conducting an extensive investigation into Rohan’s background, financial records, and recent behaviour in order to establish a possible motive.
