Elon Musk’s enthusiastic response to Google’s newly launched Willow quantum computing chip marks a significant moment in tech innovation. Willow, designed to exponentially reduce errors as more qubits are added, represents a breakthrough in tackling quantum error correction. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted Willow’s capability to solve computations in less than five minutes that would take traditional supercomputers longer than the age of the universe to process.

Musk’s reaction, a simple “Wow,” soon led to an intriguing exchange with Pichai. The conversation shifted towards futuristic ambitions, with Pichai suggesting the idea of a quantum cluster in space utilizing Musk’s Starship. Musk replied affirmatively, noting that such advancements are key to reaching Kardashev Type II civilization status—suggesting humanity is currently at less than 5% of Type I status and advocating for extensive solar panel deployment in deserts to progress further.

Musk’s Complex History with Google

Musk’s admiration for Willow contrasts with his historically contentious relationship with Google’s AI endeavors. He was critical of Google’s acquisition of DeepMind, fearing unchecked AI development. This concern partly led to his founding of OpenAI, which he later left to form his own AI venture, xAI. Musk has also openly criticized Google’s Gemini AI, accusing it of being biased and warning of potential civilization-ending risks posed by chatbots like Gemini and ChatGPT.

Google, Trump, and Innovation

The Willow launch and Musk-Pichai exchange come after Pichai’s notable congratulatory message to Donald Trump on his 2024 presidential victory. Pichai described the current era as a “golden age of American innovation” and expressed Google’s commitment to working with Trump’s administration on advancing technology.
