Haryana IPS Officer Death Sparks Protests and Political Reactions

The standoff regarding the death of Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar has deepened further. It is with the family not allowing a post-mortem or cremation until their demands are carried out. Six days after the 2001 batch officer allegedly committed suicide. It has turned into a major political and administrative issue in Haryana and Chandigarh as well.

Family Refuses Post-Mortem, Demands Action

The family of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar and his wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, has stated that “the post-mortem will not happen”. It is until action is taken against senior police officials accused of harassing Kumar. Their main demand is the termination of Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur. He was named in Kumar’s so-called suicide note along with more than a few other high-ranking officials.

The Chandigarh Police, who are conducting the investigation, have asked Amneet P. Kumar to identify the body. They also told allow for the post-mortem exam to occur. Furthermore, they stated that it is necessary to move forward with the investigation. The deadlocked situation remains intact despite the state government’s efforts to persuade the family.

31-Member Committee Gives Final Warning

A 31-member committee formed to advocate for the officer’s family ramped up tensions. It held a mahapanchayat in Chandigarh on Sunday. The committee issued the Haryana government and the Chandigarh administration a 48-hour ultimatum to fire DGP Kapur. They also told to implement strict measures against everyone mentioned in the officer’s suicide note.

A spokesperson for the committee remarked, “If the DGP of Haryana and ex-SP of Rohtak are not dismissed and arrested before 48 hours, we will be forced to take further action.” The gathering, however, was somewhat chaotic. It was after former MP Raj Kumar Saini made a controversial comment. It led to some commotion until it calmed down.

Suicide Note Names Senior Officials

Reports say that the 52-year-old officer wrote an eight-page note detailing allegations of harassment and discrimination based on caste committed by senior police officers. The note purportedly named eight officers, including DGP Kapur and ex-Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya.

With increasing pressures, the Haryana government has since removed Narendra Bijarniya from the role of Rohtak SP. However, the family insists that both Kapur and Bijarniya should be arrested and added to the FIR, in accordance with the law, including the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Political and Administrative Responses

The tragic incident has provoked a strong response from political leaders and officials. Haryana Governor Ashim Kumar Ghosh visited the bereaved family and expressed his condolences directly.

Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Krishan Kumar Bedi said that the government is “working on answering all of the family’s demands,” and assured that justice will be served. He stated that discussions are underway and that the Cabinet HoF fully supports the family.

Leaders from many parties, such as Ajay Chautala, Dushyant Chautala, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Aman Arora, and Naveen Jindal, have also engaged with the family, demanding a comprehensive investigation and justice for the officer. The Aam Aadmi Party held candle marches in many locations in Punjab and Chandigarh to express their condolences to the Kumar family.

Investigation Underway

The Chandigarh Police have set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) specifically to address this matter. The SIT arrived in Rohtak on Saturday to gather documentation and information related to the case. Officials confirmed letters were sent to the Haryana government requesting relevant documents and evidence.

The officer, the Inspector General of the Police Training Centre at Sunaria in Rohtak, had reportedly been under pressure in relation to a bribery case involving a local constable. The constable has been charged with soliciting a bribe of ₹2.5 lakh in Kumar’s name, and he has been arrested and is now formally detained.

In her letter to the Chandigarh SSP, Amneet P. Kumar noted that the FIR did not contain DGP Kapur and Bijarniya as defendants, which she claimed was the “trigger point” for her husband’s suicide. She has urged for both men to be arrested quickly in accordance with section 108 (abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Increasing Public Pressure

Public anger continues to rise, as civil rights activists, law enforcement organizations, and politicians demand transparency in the investigation. Many people believe the case exposes systemic harassment, caste discrimination and accountability, not just in this case, but as a broader issue in law enforcement.
