In an unanticipated turn that has stunned the nation, the horrific murder of newlywed Raja Raghuvanshi of Indore on his honeymoon in Meghalaya has developed into one of the most stunning trending news stories today. With additional information coming to the surface, it appears that the murder was not impulsive violence. It was a premeditated scheme with the assistance of his wife Sonam and her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha.
Honeymoon Turns Deadly
Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi had just begun their married life. They went on their honeymoon to the fabled Maa Kamakhya Temple in Assam, before heading for Shillong. What began as a spiritual and romantic getaway turned sour. It was when Raja’s body was discovered in a remote region of Meghalaya earlier in the month.
Sonam, who was reported missing with Raja, was later found and turned herself into police in Uttar Pradesh. The arrest of Sonam and her boyfriend’s arrest, Raj Kushwaha, in Indore, has revealed a dark and twisted turn of events in what should have been a romantic getaway.
In the Murder Conspiracy
According to officials from the Madhya Pradesh Crime Branch, 21-year-old Raj Kushwaha conspired with Sonam to kill Raja just days after they wed. While Sonam was with Raja in Meghalaya, Raj stayed in Indore. There, he had an alibi by being in Indore. It was close to Sonam’s family home and attending Raja’s funeral.
Investigators believe that Sonam informed the hired killers—Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi—of Raja’s location. They traveled by train from Indore to Guwahati. Then traveled to Meghalaya. A local tour guide later told police that he saw the group near the murder scene. Sonam lagging behind, Raja was travelling with his attackers.
The single identifiable piece of evidence was the murder weapon—a dao. A machete that is not native to the area, which investigators believe was purchased in Guwahati.
How Police Solved the Case
The Crime Branch said investigators were able to “get a lead”. It is based on the witness testimony and cooperation of a local guide with Meghalaya police. The accused initially fled to Bihar and then moved on to Guwahati. The Shillong police were able to get a seven-day transit remand for the suspects. With the 4th accused Anand Kurmi being arrested in Bina, Madhya Pradesh.
Raj Kushwaha has a close relationship with Sonam’s family: he worked in the billing section of her family’s plywood firm and she worked in the HR section. Sources claim that they developed a close relationship over last two years; they were in regular contact—despite Sonam’s marriage to Raja—which alerted investigators.
Accusations and family doubts
The Raghuvanshi family has absolutely no idea. Raja’s brother, Vipin, did not know about any plan past Assam and questioned Sonam’s judgement to fly off to Meghalaya with no return tickets.
Raja’s mother Uma painted an alarming picture. She alleged Sonam had literally no interest in her son and was seeking Rs 9 lakh for travel arrangements (and expensive jewelry). “My son told me, ‘Mummy, she does not not care whatsoever.” “I do not want to marry her,” she said. Uma alleged that Sonam only changed her behaviour after being confronted and was then arranging the honeymoon and ensuing crime.
An Unresolved Issue
A major arrest has taken place and we have uncovered a web of deception, however, what is still being looked into is the full ramifications of this conspiracy. Authorities are looking into various facets of this case including financial transactions, emails and text messages, and the role each of the conspirators played in the overall planning of the offence.
This troubling scenario serves as a grim reminder that deception is capable of masquerading as affection. Meanwhile, the country sits on edge waiting for justice for Raja Raghuvanshi, a man whose life ended far too early, in a situation that was supposed to give him a fresh start.
