L2: Empuraan Takes a Trip Back for Censorship

The widely awaited Mohanlal movie L2: Empuraan has returned to theatres, released in a re-edited shape after producers requested for re-censoring. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had suggested 24 edits. It involved removing two minutes and eight seconds of film, following arguments regarding particular scenes in the film.

Discussion About Referring to the Gujarat Riots

The film sparked wide-ranging debate after viewers pointed out scenes. They said that the scenes contended resembled the Gujarat riots of 2002. Facing backlash from the public and conservative groups, the filmmakers ultimately decided to go back and ask that it be re-reviewed. Among the edits were changing the name of the villain from Baba Bajrangi to Baldev, and certain references to central agencies were toned down. Finally, the name of minister-actor Suresh Gopi was removed from the credits acknowledging the film.

Producer Discusses the Changes

Producer Antony Perumbavoor spoke to the press to clarify that the edits were not made under duress. He explained, “If our cinema impacts just one common man, we are willing to make changes.” He adamantly rejected any suggestion that director Prithviraj Sukumaran was pushed aside. Also, he alleged that the entire team was united for the film.
