Nations League final 2025: In front of a packed house in Munich, Portugal claimed their second Nations League title by narrowly beating Spain 5-3 on penalties after a thrilling final that ended in a draw (2-2). This capped another great night of football for international superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The Nations League final certainly had many of the current headlines in the sporting world today when considering a late finish, penalty excitement, and the famous Ronaldo producing a goal.
Fast and Furious
There was frantic intensity to the start of the match with Spain’s young guns Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal getting early chances through their speed and footwork. The first goal of the contest arrived in the 21st minute after a messy sequence of plays; not a beautifully constructed attack. Spain’s Yamal took an ambitious shot high toward the Portugal goal forcing defender Gonçalo Inacio to make a play on the header. Yamal’s shot also had the effect of baffling the Portuguese back line who could not simply kick the ball out of danger. Now, Martin Zubimendi seized that moment to drive the loose ball into the goal. Spain up 1-0.
Portugal did not hesitate to make their own reply. Just five minutes later, Nuno Mendes and Pedro Neto collaborated on a low shot to goal that moved across the front of goal finding the bottom corner. A 1-1 game.
Spain Takes the Lead Before Ronaldo Equals
As the first half was nearing the end Spain took advantage of a very rare defensive error from Portugal. Pedri was fantastic with a pass to Mikel Oyarzabal, who cooly slotted the ball into the net, beating the goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Oyarzabal scored his third goal in an international final – he had netted already in the Euro 2024 final and the 2023 Nations League final prior to this.
Then, the player who had really been quiet for the first 60 minutes, performed. After 61, Mendes broke through and crossed in a deflected cross…Ronaldo reacted quick, sped past Marc Cucurella and struck the ball into the net to equalize. This was Ronaldo’s fourth goal versus Spain in 10 matches, bringing memories from the hattrick in the 2018 World Cup.
Ronaldo is Injured, but Portugal Keeps Going
After his goal, Ronaldo began to show signs of bodily distress he eventually limped off the pitch late in regulation time with cramp. Even without Ronaldo Portugal searched for the winner during extra time and looked the more committed and possession dominating team.
The tie continued and for the second time in three years Spain faced another penalty shoot to decide a Nations League Final. This time, however, history would not repeat itself.
Concluding Reflections
With the curtain closing on a stunning finale, Portugal stood out not only as champions but as a team characterized by grit, key moments of brilliance, and an unwavering spirit. From Ronaldo’s brilliant equalizer to Neves’ calm winner, the evening had all the elements that characterize sports news headlines today — excitement, legacy, and champions. Spain, despite their early dominance and attacking flair, will have to regroup. But for now, it’s Portugal who celebrate, crowned again as the kings of the Nations League.
