Nepal political crisis 2025: In response to violent protests by Gen Z in the neighboring country, the Uttar Pradesh government has placed its border districts adjacent to Nepal on high alert. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with the Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna has ordered police officials to continue close monitoring to maintain law and order.
“In the government announcement, there are additional police units being deployed to the vulnerable parts of the border. We have enhanced patrolling in remote locations. Also, improved security visibility to respond effectively to emergencies. Police said extra police personnel have been deployed at the borders with Nepal. We will assist and manage cross-border traffic. Also, we will enhance inter-police liaison to respond to any emergency in Uchali,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, a control room has been set up under Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) at the Police Headquarters in Lucknow, as well as a police emergency cord comprising helplines. Local news reports are playing up that the control room will serve and assist committed residents as well as maintain effective communication in the incident of an emergency.

Monitoring Unit of Social Media Opened
Officials have directed the social media unit at Police Headquarters to monitor any sensitive online discussions regarding the situation in Nepal. The purpose is for the unit to ensure false information is not shared, and to be proactive in responding if required.
The UP government stressed that the police are fully committed to maintaining internal order and assisting Indians stranded in Nepal.
Nepal’s Situation: Political and Social Unrest
The situation deteriorated in Nepal following Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation on Tuesday. It was after mass protests that have claimed 19 lives and left over 100 injured. At the cabinet meeting, Ramesh Lekhak, Nepal’s Home Minister, also exited.
So, The unrest began when 26 social media platforms including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, and X (formally Twitter) were banned. It was for failing to register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The ruling led to large protests led by Government Generation Z Activists, who claimed government corruption and oppression to free speech protest.
Eventually the ban was lifted. However, the protests turned violent. Protesters reportedly vandalized the private residence of President Ramchandra Paudel in Bohratar, Kathmandu, and set parts of the estate on fire.
At the same time, the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) was closed due to escalating security issues.

To regain control, authorities declared indefinite curfews in several areas including Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur. The updated curfew order was implemented at 8:30 am Tuesday. Citing the areas of maximum restrictions – Balkumari Bridge, Koteshwar, Sinamangal, Gaushala, Chabahil, Narayan Gopal Chowk, Gongabu, Balaju, Swayambhu Kalanki, Balkhu, and Bagmati Bridge.
There was an overwhelming presence of security forces deployed in the areas. Also, Rigid measures were introduced to prevent further escalation of the situation.
