Gyanesh Kumar has taken the office of New Chief Election Commissioner of India. This appointment was made following the President’s approval of the appointment. The outgoing CEC Rajiv Kumar resigned due to the age limit of 65 years. It’s also the first appointment made under the amended law on choosing Election Commission members.

Who is Gyanesh Kumar?

Gyanesh Kumar is a former IAS officer from the Kerala cadre who has held several executive posts in the Union government. He studied for a B.Tech in Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur. Also, He studied Business Finance and Environmental Economics in his further studies. Throughout his career, he served in a number of ministries like Defence, Home Affairs, Parliamentary Affairs, and Cooperation.

Furthermore, Kumar took an active role in the governmental area after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. He was key in the establishment of the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. In 2014, he led the operation to rescue Indian nurses taken hostage by ISIS terrorists in Iraq.

Time of Gyanesh Kumar as CEC

Gyanesh Kumar shall henceforth continue as the 26th CEC until January 26, 2029. He will supervise major elections, including the Bihar Assembly elections in 2024, Kerala and Pondicherry in 2026, and elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
