After media coverage about the United States’ military invasion to capture Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from Venezuela created international outrage. Maduro declared at a federal court in New York City that he “will remain the President of My Nation.” This announcement followed President Donald Trump’s classification of Maduro as part of “the ruling elite of Venezuela”. In front of a judge in Manhattan on Monday, Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and other federal drug offenses. Prosecutors have stated that they believe Maduro will continue to participate in organized drug trafficking. Maduro has not only denied all charges. Also, he has publicly stated that he intends to be the President of Venezuela.

The date for their next hearing has been set for March 17. Following the initial hearings, the couple was transported to the Metropolitan Detention Center, located in Brooklyn, New York. Here, they will remain under professional guard.
