Pune Dog Shelters: 10,000 Capacity by December
The issue of street dogs that have long been neglected. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is making a major step by announcing its intention to establish five more dog shelters in various locations of the city. These shelters, in total, will provide space for over 10,000 street dogs. Thus creating a significantly positive impact on the environment of the city. Besides the recent news updates, the discourse is attracting the attention of numerous local activists focusing on urban development and animal welfare.
Three Small Shelters to Begin
The regions of Naidu, Baner, and Mundhwa, three smaller facilities are being set up. This will accommodate a total of approximately 200 dogs. The report of the PMC officials revealed. This is the main focus and consists of sterilization and vaccination. Besides the ABC program, these shelters will also provide basic care for the dogs.
According to Dr. Sarika Funde-Bhosale, the chief veterinary officer of PMC, after being vaccinated and sterilized, the animals will be released in a different area. This will be different than the one they were collected from. It is according to the guidelines of the country.
It is expected that these three units will start their work immediately.
Two Large Shelters, Each With A Capacity Of 5,000
Moreover, there will be two big dog shelters to be constructed by the PMC in Bhugaon and Shindewadi. Here 5,000 dogs can be housed at a maximum. The local authorities declared that this project is a vital step forward. However, they also emphasized that the most important thing is a continuous and gradual supply of resources such as money and manpower. Also, veterinary staff for the successful implementation of such a large-scale project.
The Supreme Court Orders Are Strengthening The Project
One of the recent decisions by the Supreme Court is the order to local authorities in different states. It is to monitor the situation of stray dogs in public places such as schools, hospitals, railway stations, bus depots, and sports grounds. The SC order further establishes that freed-from-sterilization dogs are to be released in different areas after the completion of the operation. A direction which PMC officials confirm they will follow closely.

The announcement that the shelters are very close to becoming operational has led to the support of the project. It is by a huge number of urban animal welfare organizations.
