The legal dispute over the ₹30,000 crore estate of Sunjay Kapur, the late businessman, has taken another twist. New court documents filed in the Delhi High Court suggest that Sunjay was integral in helping his ex-wife. This was for Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, and their children, Samaira and Kiaan, obtain citizenship in Portugal.

This claim comes amid a bitter inheritance struggle involving Karisma’s children and Priya Sachdev, Sunjay’s wife.

Sunjay’s Assistance for Citizenship Application

Documents show WhatsApp messages and accompanying documents show that communications continued between Sunjay and Karisma. It was regarding the process of obtaining their citizenship. The messages reportedly indicated that Sunjay assisted Karisma and her children in the steps necessary to obtain Portuguese citizenship.

One message refers to the need to renounce Indian citizenship for a Portuguese passport. Apparently with Sunjay reminding Karisma, “India does not allow dual citizenship.” These documents will now be entered into the review of the High Court.

Asset Dispute Worth ₹30,000 Crore

On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court heard an application by Samaira and Kiaan. They are seeking their fair share of their father’s considerable inheritance. Sunjay’s attorneys, led by senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, assert that his wife Priya Sachdev falsified his will to exclude them from inheritance.

Priya’s advocates, senior advocates Rajiv Nayar and Shyel Trehan, denied the accusation. They argued that his children received assets worth ₹1,900 crore from the trust shortly. It was before they initiated the lawsuit.

The court, presided over by Justice Jyoti Singh, has asked Priya to respond with a full accounting of Sunjay Kapur’s assets. It should include both movable and immovable assets. This should be done prior to the next hearing in this matter on October 9.

Marriage and Divorce: Karisma Kapoor married Sunjay Kapur in 2003 and divorced in 2016. Their children, Samaira and Kiaan, were born in 2005 and 2011 respectively.

3rd Marriage: Sunjay married Priya Sachdev in 2017.

Disputing the Will: At a family event on July 30, Priya is alleged to have revealed a will, dated March 21, which has caused this dispute.

Legal Proceedings: Karisma’s children are disputing the authenticity of this will based on their claim that it wrongly excludes them from their father’s estate.
