At age 24, a remote programmer from Delhi, India, is proving the common wisdom of 9-5 working hours is not really the only way to achieve. As a remote programmer, he makes an impressive ₹40 Lakhs Per Annum (LPA). He is working for an AI start-up funded by Y Combinator. But he only works on average three to four hours a day.
The Paradox of High Pay and Low Hours
His parents are concerned because he doesn’t work long enough hours in their mind. As a result of their belief that success comes from “burning the midnight oil”. They question whether he could be doing anything illegal instead of being successful.
On LinkedIn, Rohan Dhawan (the founder of a business consulting company called UAbility) shared his nephew’s story. How his nephew’s career at the AI company was different from their experience growing up.
Productivity in the Age of AI
Innovation within Artificial Intelligence (AI) has impacted multiple business paradigms. This trending news today surrounding AI has highlighted an increasing divide amongst generations in relation to their views on work.
As per industry expert Shubham Dhawan, by 2026, a skilled developer using both AI and his/her own development experience will be able to reduce an 8-hour day to approximately 3 hours of concentrated work. Historically, traditional IT companies (such as TCS & Infosys) have placed value on how many hours of work is done in a given day. Conversely, most new/start-up companies are more focused on the outcome than the amount of time spent working.
Reevaluate the Standards of “Effort”
For those in the older generations, the above example demonstrates the need to re-evaluate how productivity can/should be measured. As indicated by a 24 year-old’s parents yesterday after he completed 12-hour shifts over the course of a weekend (for half the normal pay as a contractor). They would have preferred that he take the entire year to finish his task. Whether that taken 15 hours or 15 days. Rather than the visible amount of “effort” required to complete.
Dhawan ends his message with a recommendation to all modern day workers. Results should matter more than Hours worked. With the advances of AI technology, the “Hustle Culture” (meaning the act of working longer hours, staying later at work) will be replaced with a “Smart Work Culture” (focusing on the Efficiently). Whereby output is more important than the amount of time invested in the process.
