Samay Raina, comedian and host of Indian TV show India’s Got Latent (IGL), has spoken out publicly. It was about the negative reaction to IGL from some fellow comedians like Sunil Pal and music producer B Praak and actor Mukesh Khanna on social media. His response became viral almost immediately and is now trending all across major publications in India.
‘Playing a Clean Character Is Unnatural’
“Portraying a pure character is unnatural to me as a comedic performer”. Mr. Raina states and goes on to say that in order for him to uphold a ‘clean image’ as a performer. This would not only contradict my character as a comedian but the type of comedy that I have been performing my entire career.
He explains that trying to modify, delete or filter the content of performances to make them more socially acceptable is almost always an artificial and forced situation. He states that the honesty of his comedy has always come from bold, shocking and ridiculous humour.
Debate Over IGL
The basis of the debate on social media started with the content of the IGL show. As many fans of the show (and a few other comedians) felt that parts of the show’s content were not appropriate. The debate soon turned into a hashtag war of sorts. Here others would relate Ranveer Allahbadia (BeerBiceps) to Samay, who is also a comedian and host of a comedy show on television.
Mr. Raina went on to share that the situation reached a point where an FIR (First Information Report) may have been filed against him and the IGL team. Putting more pressure on the show and the entire IGL production team.
As you can imagine, Samay Raina has responded in an emotional and passionate way about the whole doings and now you can watch a video where he explains his feelings.
Strong Reaction and Emotional Statement
He said that he felt emotionally affected by all that had happened. When he made the comment, “We die in the crossfire of Kashmir.” This indicated to him that the way in which he was being attacked by various individuals had a real and profound effect on him. It may have even impacted decisions related to future programming of this show in India.
Despite being attacked, he stated that he felt he could express himself freely while responding to his detractors because many people from different walks of life (including politicians, celebrities and comedians) were forming their opinions without ever really taking the time to know what the material really meant.
He cited advice given to him by Sunil Pal on learning about some of the best comedians in the world such as Kapil Sharma. It was to emphasize the fact that he had created a style of comedy. This was clearly different from others and not meant to be constrained by traditional paths.
Support from industry and mixed responses
Interestingly, Samay stated that he also received support from the worldwide audience of people who were outside of India. His material was still relevant to an international audience.
Many opinions exist about what constitutes artistic freedom in regard to comedy. While other opinions continue to shape what they believe to be comedy limits in India.
Future plans for Samay Raina
Despite all of this, Samay has said he is considering the possibility of returning to apiece (India’s Got Latent) with a second season on YouTube. He described this moment as a pinnacle of achievement where he felt like the events of the show turned out well. Even though there were some complaints regarding its presentation.
Samay Raina’s courageous response to external criticism has spurred on an already burgeoning dialogue on the issue of free expression and artistic liberty within the realm of comedy. In looking at trending news today, it is easy to see that this continuing discord represents an ever-evolving struggle between artistic expression (comedy included) and an audience’s perception.
As far as whether or not this represents a paradigm shift within the realm of Indian Comedy, or simply another viral incident. One thing remains constant about Samay Raina – his authenticity. Even amidst the external noise around him.
