Matthew Perry Death Case

On Wednesday, a U.S. District Court judge sentenced Jasveen Sangha, known as the “Ketamine Queen” to 15 years in prison. It is as a result of her role in the death of Matthew Perry in 2023. The sentencing concluded one of Hollywood’s most notorious drug-related incidents.

Matthew Perry was famous for playing the character of Chadler Bing in the sitcom Friends. He was found dead at home on October 28, 2023. The manner of his death was ruled as a result of acute ketamine effects from respiratory distress, as well as drowning from submersion in the pool.

An investigation into Perry’s death determined that he had been under doctor’s supervision for ketamine issues due to Depression. However he sought out additional ketaine on his own freely, rather than through normal means. Investigators reviewed Perry’s supply source and found that he connected back to illegal high-volume ketamine suppliers such as Sangha.

Prosecutors portrayed Sangha as the “hub” of an upscale ketamine trafficking business. The judge also confirmed Sangha’s long history of drug sales as part of an extensive network of customers.

Throughout the proceedings, Judge Garnett expressed strong condemnation of Sangha’s actions. Especially when presented with evidence that she continued selling illegally obtained controlled substances after having her involvement established related to a deadly overdose in 2019.

It is believed that the length of her 15-year prison sentence will be longer than those of the other defendants who were involved in the same case.

Tears From Family Members

During the hearing, Keith Morrison, Perry’s stepfather demonstrated how having lost an actor of Perry’s skill had affected him emotionally.

“He was an extraordinary individual full of energy, excitement, and enthusiasm. We continue to suffer from significant grief and sadness due to his passing.” He made it clear that he wanted to make sure people realize there are real people who die because of this type of situation.

Arguments Presented In Defense of Sangha

Sangha’s attorney (Mark Geragos) argued Perry died due to his own addiction. Therefore, any actions he took were the result of his addiction rather than him doing something illegal.

Geragos also expressed his contempt for the term “Ketamine Queen,” which he claims has been created by the media and has no basis in truth.

In the end, the Court held Sangha culpable for knowingly distributing dangerous substances outside the scope of the law.

Different Defendants Have Received Different Sentences

There are five different individuals involved in the incident. They were all doctors and other people who assisted the doctors (with the distribution of the drugs). The range of punishment varies widely (from jail time to house arrest).

Perry’s long-time business partner, who reportedly helped the actor with obtaining and/or using illegal medications, has not had their sentence imposed yet.

A Situation Leading to Larger Issues

The case has kicked off once again the topic of celebrity usage of drugs. Also, responsibility for those who are using them, addiction, trafficking. Other similar topics were highlighted due to the amount of media attention in recent news updates surrounding the issue. A great deal of attention has been given to the dangers of substance abuse (i.e., drug usage). Particularly among those who have or can obtain medical treatment.

This ruling finishes the first part of the legal process. However, the implications from this ruling on society’s awareness and legal obligations that exist for drug abusers will likely be felt for many years into the future.
