Shubman Gill Captaincy Sparks Heated Reactions

Srikkanth’s Straight Talk: Gill is Not a Lock Yet
In an interview with India Today, Srikkanth expressed some strong concerns regarding putting Gill in the upcoming Test captaincy position, noting that he has yet to solidify his place in the playing XI- and particularly in foreign conditions.
“Who’s the immediate option for captaincy now? Shubman Gill? I don’t know, I don’t even think he is a lock in the XI,” Srikkanth stated.
He said that captaincy in the longest format requires consistent results and demonstrated capability in difficult conditions – which Gill is still working towards.
Bumrah the Better Pick?
Instead of Gill, Srikkanth preferred star bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the captaincy position, saying Bumrah had the experience, temperament, and guaranteed place in the team. Srikkanth too suggested KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant should be vice-captains to substitute Bumrah when he is rested.
“At this stage, I think Bumrah should be the then captain.” If I were the chairman of selectors, I would make Bumrah the captain. I’d then tell the boss, ‘You can play whatever matches you want.’ ”
Criticism of BCCI’s Selection Process
Srikkanth had no qualms in slamming the selection panel, headed by Ajit Agarkar, suggesting the selectors were backing Gill because of potential rather than form, and warned against appointing a captain “just for the sake of it.”
“There is nothing wrong with giving captaincy to young players, but it has to be earned.” “Let Gill first show he can score in Test cricket,” he said, pointing out that the batter had never done so in England, Australia, or South Africa.
Kohli’s Retirement Leaves Leadership Void
Srikkanth also discussed the shock with the Virat Kohli retirement, particularly that the BCCI perhaps could have done more to retain him in the leadership group, also considering the lack of leadership in Test cricket.
“If I was the chair of the selection committee, my first question would have been to him: ‘Boss, I want you to lead India for a bit.’ “,” remarked Srikkanth.
Srikkanth believes that Kohli’s experience and leadership may have helped India get through this transition, even if only for now.
