Yemen Civil War

The intensifying hostilities in Yemen are increasing concerns about the supply of oil worldwide, maritime security, and stability of the region. The recent incidents of fighting between the Houthi rebels and the regular forces have attracted more attention from all over the world with the Houthi’s assaults on Saudi Arabia.
Pro-government forces claim they have won parts of Shaab-al-Jinn back after intense fighting. The commander of Southern Forces Tawfiq Al Haboun stated that the Houthi insurgents were using snipers, artillery, and missile fire during combat.

Key Shipping Route Issues

Despite years of fighting against the Saudi-backed forces, the Houthis control Yemen’s capital Sanaa since 2014 and remain a powerful military force. Their position near the Bab al-Mandab Strait creates alarm among the public regarding the volume of shipping and the supply of energy resources.

The Bab al-Mandab Strait is a significant link between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, which is of vast importance for the international shipping of goods and oil transportation. While pro-government forces state that they managed to regain some part of the disputed territory.

Any additional interruption to shipping might raise transportation expenses and exert further pressure on global oil prices.

Thousands of Families Face Humanitarian Crisis

Yemen’s humanitarian situation has gotten worse due to a spike in violence. As per the International Organization for Migration, close to 200,000 people had to leave their homes since the flare-up began in September.
Displaced families are struggling to find food, water, and shelter. Many left their homes with only a few belongings, leaving them to face worsening situations.

Hospitals in Aden, a port city, are under pressure from patients. They are receiving and treating wounded civilians and government soldiers. Medical teams say the extent of injuries includes, among others, gunshot wounds and broken bones, and situations where amputation is necessary.

Among the people that are injured is a 12-year old boy who suffered injuries due to a drone.

Effect of Geopolitics on the Situation

The situation has greater significance, given that Iran (which is the main enemy of Saudi Arabia) supports the Houthis. Attacks on Saudi territory have raised grievances in the Middle East regarding security. The conflict seems to be escalating.
Despite a cease-fire during which stability returned to Yemen, the resumption of clashes has brought doubts about peace back again.

In the trending news today, these affairs remain relevant because the conflict threatens the stability of the region, the world trading system and the lives of many Yemeni citizens.
Even with the escalation of hostilities in Yemen, medical personnel continue attending to patients fighting on all sides, highlighting the urgent need for peace and humanitarian aid.
