Mehdi Hasan vs Laura Loomer: An intense argument on social media involving journalist Mehdi Hasan and far-right commentator Laura Loomer has sparked another conversation about racism, immigration, and misinformation in the U.S. The argument began after Loomer made racist comments about Hasan on social media. He told him to “go back” to an “Islamic country.” Hasan was quick to rebut Loomer with counter-evidence.

The Trigger: A Comment on Gun Violence

The spat started when Mehdi Hasan commented on a post about a shooting with a death toll of a older, 40-something (years old) man. He was said to be a Mormon church member. He was found with an AR-15 rifle and 2 American flags in his car. Also, Hasan stated the following, reflecting on the irony of the man’s gun violence in U.S. society.

“An AR-15, a U.S. Flag, and a gun massacre. I guess there’s nothing more American than that.”

His comment, an attempt to highlight the systemic gun violence issues in America, earned an angry response from a well known extreme-right commentator, Laura Loomer. Someone known for her pronounced extreme right positions and inflammatory comments, Loomer attempted to attack Hasan with a racially provocative tweet.

Loomer’s racist tweet read as follows:

“You are an immigrant who practices Islam. Whenever you want, you can go back to the UK and the Islamic countries where your parents were born.” If you despise it here, why are you in the US? Just go away.

Her words quickly attracted backlash on social media. It was for promoting xenophobia and religious bigotry. Hasan addressed her error in fact while noting her ignorance.

“India is where my parents came from, and that is not an Islamic country,” he said. “You have the knowledge, intelligence, and IQ of a small, (and angry) child.”

Hasan’s rapid response became popular. It ignited a wide-ranging discussion on various platforms. Many of the social media users and some journalists noted Loomer’s statement as racist rhetoric continuing in this new, ongoing environment of immigration debate under Donald Trump’s second term.

Public Response and Larger Context

This interaction became one of the more talked about topics from these and other recent news updates. It was with users noting that Loomer’s comments reflect the unhealthy atmosphere. Also, We should expect to see in online conversations about politics. Hasan’s supporters claimed him as calm but assertive. While opponents of Loomer pointed out her lengthy history of racially charged attacks.

Observers also noted that this incident highlights a broader argument of anti-immigrant rhetoric. This has gained momentum under Trump’s immigration policy.

In the recent months, the Biden administration has tightened immigration rules and reinstated ICE raids of undocumented migrants, which has intensified the national discussion on race and identity.

Loomer’s History of Racism

Laura Loomer was criticized for posting racist comments in the past. She has often posted incendiary content on her social media pages, which is focused on Muslim immigrants.

In a more recent post that appeared online, Loomer praised the Trump administration’s decision to halt all visitor visas from Gaza, even for humanitarian or medical purposes. Hasan condemned the decision, posting a link to a Rolling Stone article that stated,

“Think about how one must be completely lacking in compassion and devoid of empathy to be witnessing children in need of medical care and actively trying to stop it.”

Loomer responded with a video of Palestinian kids receiving medical care in San Francisco and called them “Islamic invaders,” defining them as a “national security problem.” Loomer received backlash for the post which she deleted shortly after sharing it.

Immigration Policies Under Scrutiny

While Loomer continues to support Trump’s harsh immigration policies, experts say rhetoric like this intensifies the divides and divisions in American society. Policies recently announced – including higher fees for H-1B visas and restrictions on high-skilled employment – have been met with a fair amount of resistance from the business community and proponents of human rights.

The feud – if you can even call it that – between Loomer and Hasan has again highlighted the dangers that hate-based narratives can bring into the broader public conversation. While Loomer continues to remain unapologetic, Hasan’s level-headed and fact-based response has received praise for being a stark reminder that facts still matter in an age where misinformation and racially-nuanced hostile rhetoric is commonplace.
