Flydubai Flight Incident

A Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia on September 30 after a violent incident involving its pilots. The aircraft, flight FZ1073, landed safely at Tabuk airport, with passengers later continuing to Israel on a replacement flight.

What happened on the Flydubai flight?

According to Israeli officials, the co-pilot allegedly stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, and then attempted to take control of the aircraft. Flight-tracking data showed the plane plunged more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds during the emergency.

The injured captain reportedly managed to open the cockpit door despite his wounds. Passengers and crew then entered the cockpit and restrained the co-pilot. Two other Flydubai pilots travelling on board subsequently helped land the aircraft safely at Tabuk.

Both pilots were taken to hospital in Tabuk. India’s embassy in Saudi Arabia said Machchhar was receiving treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.

What is known about the motive?

The motive remains under investigation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saudi authorities were questioning the alleged attacker and that it was too early to determine whether there was an external motive or involvement.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described the incident as an attempted terror attack, while Flydubai urged against premature speculation until authorities complete their investigation.

What happened to the passengers?

All passengers were reported safe and were later transported from Tabuk to Tel Aviv on a replacement Flydubai flight. The incident has become one of the major recent news updates involving commercial aviation and regional security.

A second Flydubai flight, FZ1081, was initially reported to have turned around, but this was later attributed to an apparent flight-tracking error; it continued towards Tel Aviv without reporting an emergency.
