Ahmedabad Dosa Incident: The tragedy of the death of two small girls in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are all over the trending news today. Also, the girls are believed to have consumed food that had been made from a contaminated fermented batter (known as khiri). This shocking event has begun to cause great concern in the community regarding food safety.
What is the Story?
According to family members of the two deceased, their father, Vimal Prajapati, purchased the dosa batter at a local shop (known as Ghanashyam Dairy) on April 1, 2026. They took it home where they prepared dosa.
In the early morning hours of April 2nd, the four members of this family (father, mother and two children) all began to vomit uncontrollably. The family was taken to hospital where they remain in serious condition.
Timing of Events Leading Up to the Tragedy
As it stands, the following timeline shows the progression of events leading to the two children’s deaths:
- On April 3, 2022, the family’s three month old infant passed away.
- On April 5, 2022, the four year old child passed away.
- Both parents remain in serious condition in hospital.
Local authorities begin an investigation
The local police began an investigation based on a complaint filed by the family. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation seized batter samples from the dairy shop’s bulk food supply. So, they sent them to the Food Safety Laboratory for testing and analysis.
Officials have so far been unable to determine what led to the deaths of the individuals involved in this incident, as autopsy results are still pending.
Ghanashyam Dairy, which sold the batter used by those affected. It claims that it has never received any customer complaints about the product. The owner stated that about 100 kilograms of khiru were sold that day. He never had complaints from other customers.
Since the incident occurred, the owner of Ghanashyam Dairy has reached out to several of his customers and has not found any who have experienced illnesses that are consistent with those experienced by the individuals who died.
Questions Still Remain
Authorities are currently concentrating on essential aspects of the case including:
- If the batter is contaminated
- Possible foodborne illness or preservation issues
- Environmental or other external factors
Surprisingly, only 300 of the total 3000 grams of rice were used to prepare the dosa from the three kilograms initially purchased, making this investigation even more complicated to complete.
