Delhi Cabinet decided to implement a major overhaul of the city’s administrative setup. It was in an extraordinary meeting on Thursday. A plan to modify the revenue structure of the city by adding two additional districts to the current eleven ones was approved. Why the Reorganisation Was Needed
The reorganization of the revenue structure was chiefly prompted by the discrepancies in jurisdictional lines of the revenue districts and bodies of local governance. For a long time, the Delhi government faced problems in the mismatching of the jurisdictional areas. It was among their revenue districts, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and the Delhi Cantonment Board which led to the confusion of service provision to citizens.
Through this reorganization it is envisaged that all the 13 revenue districts will correspond to the following:
- 12 MCD regions
- NDMC
- Delhi Cantonment Board
The purpose of this matching is to facilitate the provision of services at a higher standard. Also, to reduce the occurrence of duplicate services, and set up a comprehensive governance system.
The New List of 13 Revenue Districts
Furthermore, Delhi districts were fifteen in number earlier- Central, East, New Delhi, North Delhi, North East, North West, Shahdara, South Delhi, South East, South West, and West with a few changes made recently.
According to the new blueprint, a total of three new districts have been created –
- Old Delhi
- Central North
- Outer Delhi
- Shahdara district has been removed
Consequently, the final list of 13 districts consists of:
South East, Old Delhi, North, New Delhi, Central, Central North, South West, Outer North, North West, North East, East, South, and West.
Also, Delhi authorities said that the newly formed districts had been carved out of the division of the regions of the current districts in a way that administrative responsibilities were evenly distributed.
