Elderly Care India: An unfortunate incident in Sonipat, Haryana has ignited widespread discussions. After an aged man was cremated by the employees of a care home after living there for the last days of his life. The story has become one of the most discussed stories in the recent news. It is raising the issue of increasing loneliness faced by older persons and changing family equations.
Shivcharan Ratan Gupta, a retired textile businessman passed away after living for his last months in a nursing home. Even when all three of his daughters got the information about his death, none of them attended his cremation. Supposedly watched the event via a video call and then reportedly asked to send them the recording of the cremation.
The care home states that Shivcharan Gupta had been a prosperous businessman himself. He spent the money earned to provide his daughters education and help them start their own career.
It is noted that after the death of his wife, Meena Gupta, about one and a half years ago he moved to the care home where the staff served as his caretakers.
Last Rites were Conducted by Care Home Workers
As Shivcharan’s health deteriorated, the nursing home contacted all three daughters and requested them to come and meet him. However, it is alleged that all three daughters cited unavailability for different reasons. After his demise, the staff then gave them time to reach Sonipat and even suggested that the body be kept. However, when the daughters declined, the caretakers got the task of getting the last rites done.
One daughter allegedly sent ₹5,100 for funeral expenses. Thereafter, the family asked the care home to scatter the ashes in the River Ganga.
Viral Clip Triggers Emotions
A video that emerged online captured a part of the conversation between one of the daughters and caretakers at the time of cremation. In the video, she asks them whether the rituals had been done properly before asking them to give her the video recording of the last rites. The conversation quickly caught up and went viral on social media.
This has once again opened the debate on the emotional health of elderly parents. Also, the consequences of migration, fast-paced life, and the relevance of keeping family ties intact beyond financial help.
