GST Tax Rate Changes: During his latest speech to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi focused on the importance of buying and selling swadeshi products, attempting to link it to the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, claiming that like how the Swadeshi movement took India to independence, it would now take India to a new milestone in terms of economy.
GST Reforms as a Catalyst for Growth and Simplification for Business
The upcoming GST reforms, beginning September 22 (the first day of Navratri), will launch in as tangible evidence of, “One Nation, One Tax.” PM Modi articulated, these reforms will not only expand India’s growth potential but also reinforce our ease of doing business and attract additional foreign investment.
The Prime Minister congratulated the country on these advancements. He reiterated that every state would co-benefit from this evolutionary journey.
GST Bachat Utsav: A Double Bonanza
Modi announced a GST Bachat Utsav(either savings festival) to commence with Navratri celebrations. He proclaimed it as a “double bonanza” for the poor and middle class, farmers, women, shop owners and traders in relation to decreased GST rates, and an income tax exemption up to 12 lakh rupees.
More Affordable Options for Consumers
Recent news updates reflect that GST rates have been reviewed for 375 products, easing prices for many households and businesses. The simplified two-tier GST structure will essentially introduce prices of 5% and 18%, while ultra-luxury products will remain under a 40% rate. Tobacco and products related to tobacco will remain in the 28% plus cess tax structure.
Various items that are widely bought by consumers on a general basis, amid the reduced items in price, such as ghee, butter, paneer, dried fruits, coffee, and packaged food items will have decreased prices as a result of minimum unit price regulation. Popular items may likely also go down in price, such as televisions, washing machines, air conditioning units, and potentially other items on their list, this would be a good time for a family of moderate means to shop for the holidays coming up in the not too distant futures.
Support for MSMEs and other implications
These changes will likely assist micro, small and medium enterprises, all of which have had challenges due to the complex tax structure in place for many decades. The government is looking to encourage small businesses and enhance manufacturing with a lower compliance burden and reduced tax rates.
Consider this as a Season for Growth Festivals
Navratri is a period to begin these revisions and Modi promised that the festive season should be a joyous occasion for all. Consumers will benefit from lower prices on these essential items, while companies benefit from smoother operations and additional investor confidence.
