The 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris have been witnessing superhuman feats of athleticism, and Indian archers are making long strides, revealing their art and grit in equal measure. Fighting out on the historical Esplanade des Invalides, Indian para-archers have managed to turn in some performances that stole the hearts of fans back home and those around the globe.
A Legacy of Excellence
The Indian para journey in archery has been all about never-say-die spirit and brilliance. So, when the 2024 Paralympics emerged, it was merely a continuum of this as some Indian archers plunged into action across various categories and events. The contingent also includes several senior performers like Rakesh Kumar, Sheetal Devi, and Sarita Kumari, to name a few, who have given rich service to the sport.
Key Performances and Highlights
The performances of **Rakesh Kumar**, reaching the semifinals in the Men’s Individual Compound Open category, have been outstanding, and he has shown tremendous precision and consistency to present his case for a medal.
The other star for the Indian team has been **Sheetal Devi** from Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir. This girl was born without arms due to a condition known as Phocomelia. Sheetal has overcome immense challenges to take part at the highest level. She made it to the round of 16 in the Women’s Individual Compound Open category, barely missing out on a spot in the quarterfinals.
Likewise, **Sarita Kumari** from Faridabad, Haryana, brought equal furore as she made a last-eight finish in the Women’s Individual Compound Open category, truly a profoundly inspiring journey that indicated her commitment and hard work.
The Venue: Esplanade des Invalides
This has been the venue for a very historically rich competition-the archery events-taking place on the Esplanade des Invalides in Paris. Scenically, the setting has enhanced not only the aesthetic pleasure of the competition but also added that layer of historical importance to join the modern Paralympic Games with the rich cultural heritage of Paris.
Classifications and Competition Format
Para-archery at the Paralympics is divided into two main classes:
- W1 Class: This class includes athletes with severe impairments in muscle strength, coordination, or range of movement and always compete in wheelchairs. They use bows restricted to 45 lbs in draw weight without magnifying sight.
- Open Class: This class includes those who can also compete in a wheelchair, standing, or leaning on a stool. They are characterized by having limited movement in their trunk and limbs but normal arm function or balance problems.
Competitions start with a ranking round in which each archer shoots 72 arrows at 50m or 70m. In the head-to-head elimination rounds, athletes shoot three arrows per end over five ends.
Future Prospects and Impact
The Indian archers’ results in the 2024 Paralympics have set the bar pretty high for the rest of the competitions. Long after they are off the field, their tales of defeating odds and pushing the frontiers of human possibility will continue to inspire millions. As the games progress, the focus remains on celebrating the spirit of the Paralympics and the incredible achievements of its athletes.
