Following the release of numerous purported videos of senior IPS officer and Director General of Police (Civil Rights Enforcement) K Ramachandra Rao believed to be inappropriate. The Karnataka Government has suspended him. This has drawn widespread political backlash and raised serious questions about the role of the police leadership in the state.

On Monday, multiple unverified video clips and audio recordings appeared online. It claimed to show K Ramachandra Rao engaging in sexually suggestive conduct with women in his office. A suspension notice was subsequently released by the state government stating that Rao’s actions were deemed to be “obscene” and “inappropriate” for a government official. As part of the suspension, Rao has been instructed not to leave the police headquarters for any reason. Unless he has received written permission from the state government.

Denials of Accuracy by Rao-Claims Videos are ‘Fabricated’

K Ramachandra Rao has explicitly refuted every allegation. Asserting that the videos in question are “groundless, false and manufactured” and has commented on his astonishment over their appearance. Rao remarked to reporters that he was completely unaware of their existence and where they originated from.

“Today’s technology has made it possible for anything to happen. It has been many years since this happened. I am unaware of how or when or by whom it was done,” said Rao. On being asked whether the recorded videos remain from when he was stationed in Belagavi. He informed that if the date was accurate then they would be from approximately 8 years ago.

While attempting to speak to Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara Monday, it seems there was a lack of communication as he was unable to secure a meeting.

Response from the Government and Other Political Parties

In response to the recent news updates of the issue Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah commented on behalf of the government stating that no person regardless of his status is above the law.

If following fully appreciated an inquiry, if Rao is found guilty, he can expect harsh consequences.

Suresh Kumar condemning the incident as “shameless, unjustifiable that tarnished the reputation of the entire police organization.” The Senior BJP Leader stated that the actions of Rao demonstrate how the actions of an officer. Public pressure caused Rao to be put on leave in March, when Rao was serving as CMD of Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation. When an investigation was completed Rao returned in August as DGP of Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement.
