A political controversy erupted in West Bengal. It was when BJP leader Tarun Chugh likened Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. It happened amid the ongoing unrest in Murshidabad violence concerning protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
BJP’s Scathing Attack on Mamata Banerjee
BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh said, “Mamata Banerjee is doing things similar to actions of Jinnah.” Currently, her image is gaining acknowledgment as a modern Jinnah. It is because her political party is seeking to continue the efforts of the Muslim League. He mentioned that the current social and political atmosphere in Bengal is similar to the communal strife encountered in the 1940s. Chugh also strongly reproached Banerjee for failing to speak about the deaths of three individuals during the violent protests. He labeling her silence “disgraceful” and “extremely condemnable.” He accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration of endangering Hindus under the pretext of minority appeasement.
Murshidabad Riots and Action Taken by Law Enforcement
The Murshidabad riots arose out of protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. After the riots erupted, roughly 150 persons have been arrested by the West Bengal Police. In order to restore peace and order, law enforcement sent large police contingents to areas like Samserganj and Dhuliyan. Additionally, the Union Home Ministry sent five additional companies of the Border Security Force (BSF) to the areas afflicted by violence. This was in response to an official request from the state government to help deal with the situation’s deterioration.
Allegation of Targeted Agression
On top of the BJP’s attack, party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla alleged that “violence is sanctioned by the state, is protected by the state and is encouraged by the state.” He accused the TMC government of facilitating targeted violence against Hindus, including the desecration of temples and forcing Hindu families to flee.
Mamata Banerjee’s Appeal for Peace
In light of rising tensions, Mamata Banerjee has made an appeal for peace and harmony in the state. She has assured the protestors that the contentious Waqf law would not be implemented in Bengal, likely to soothe the public, and restore peace. The situation in West Bengal has sparked an intense discussion across the political sphere and social media, with many individuals asking for accountability and action to avoid further unrest.
This event marks one of the most heated political confrontations in West Bengal in the last few months. With the state responding to the aftermath of the violence, both the central and state governments are feeling increased pressure. It is to deliver justice and secure communal harmony.
