Shubhanshu Shukla ISS mission: In a significant milestone for India’s space ambitions, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s current mission to the International Space Station (ISS) is being hailed as a pivotal achievement in India’s human spaceflight progress. With this mission – as stated by Air Vice Marshal Anupam Agarwal, the former Commandant at IAM – it represents the first real-time evaluation of India’s astronaut selection and training protocols and procedures in a space environment.

In an interview, Agarwal emphasized the significance of the mission. He stated that India’s astronaut selection process is now being assessed for the first time in real microgravity. With Shukla’s involvement on the Axiom-4 mission, all components of the astronaut selection process designed and developed by IAM. Both physiological testing and psychological toughness skills, is currently being evaluated.

“The full process of aerospace medicine is being validated. Both physiological and psychological selection, that is underway,” Agarwal stated. “Everything is now being evaluated in a real microgravity situation.”

The Significance of IAM: More Than a Simple Process

Not only do the IAM and the Institute of Aerospace Medicine select astronaut candidates, but the IAM also contributes to the development of databases that contain significant baseline physiological and medical data.

This information will help quantify how environmental variables like microgravity change the human body. It is important in planning for longer and more complex missions.

Agarwal explained that Shukla’s changes will also be analyzed against baseline expectations. So, India has a better understanding of how good it is at data collection and analysis.

The Importance of Shukla’s Mission

Given its limited experience in crewed space missions, India has had limited opportunities to collect real-time information about astronauts in space. This is why Shukla’s journey is seen as landmark for realizing the Gaganyaan mission – India’s next crewed spaceflight.

“This is very complicated, and many developed countries have tried and failed to do this,” Agarwal explained. “Getting these international experiences is the great success of this program.”

Moreover, information related to human spaceflight is often not available in public databases. It can only be obtained from hands-on experiences. This makes Shukla’s mission – a crucial educational opportunity for scientists, engineers, and physicians in India.

Human Engineering: The Key Role of Aerospace Medicine

In the future, IAM’s responsibilities will include not only astronaut health. Agarwal explains that aerospace medicine specialists are analogous to space engineers in the human context. They make the equipment and tools that astronauts use and interact with during missions.
