A shocking incident in Thane has caused a public outcry after an elderly gentleman, aged 70. He is known for promoting sanitation in his community, was allegedly assaulted by an Ola cab driver. It was for confronting him about spitting on the pavement. This has turned into one of the most talked about recent news updates. It has also resulted in quick action by authorities.

70-Year-Old Man Assaulted for Raising Sanitation Complaint

Shahrost Dastur lives in Thatcher Society, Thane. He is known for his efforts to keep public spaces clean in the community. On Monday evening, as Dastur was walking home from a stroll with his wife. He saw a taxicab driver spit allegedly three times against a tree next to the road.

Witnesses state Dastur, out of goodwill, approached the taxicab driver and asked him not to spit. However, the driver instead became violent, verbally insulted Dastur and then assaulted him physically.

The driver allegedly struck Dastur in a way that caused him to lose his balance and collide with the ground on multiple occasions. Other residents, store employees and homeowners from around the area rushed to the aid of Dastur after he was assaulted. Many provided him immediately with assistance.

Many local vendors and those who live in the area view Dastur as a humble, wholesome and community-minded individual. He has continuously encouraged the people around him to remain clean and tidy. Many local vendors stated he often gathered up abandoned plates from sidewalks and discarded them in the proper bins. Also, many people in the area referred to him as an honourable person. He always treated people with kindness and respect.

Furthermore, witnesses claim that the alleged attack was vicious and bystanders were left speechless. It was when they viewed the actions of the driver involved.

Public Outrage from the Viral Video

Also, a video clip of the incident that was taken by a bystander was widely distributed across multiple platforms on social media quickly after it occurred. The video caused a lot of negative responses and resulted in multiple phone calls being made demanding action be taken against those responsible for the event. Therefore, public was very traumatized by seeing the alleged assault on an elderly man who was only promoting cleanliness in the community.

Deputy CM Orders Police to File More Serious Charges

Hence, in response to the public outcry, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde instructed the police to file an attempted murder charge against the driver.

Nishant Shukla was located, arrested and brought into the police department at Vartak Nagar. The police have opened a file on the case and are conducting a comprehensive investigation. Moreover, the investigation will also include the viral video footage.

Also, police sources confirm that Shukla denies spitting on the sidewalk. They stated that he stepped out of his vehicle to wash his face and gargle. Following his arrest, he allegedly apologized numerous times. As the investigation continues, the incident has ignited ongoing discussions regarding community obligation and behavior in the public realm. Also, the importance of protecting elderly members of the community who participate actively in their communities.
