Following the release of numerous purported videos of senior IPS officer and Director General of Police (Civil Rights Enforcement) K Ramachandra Rao believed to be inappropriate. The Karnataka Government has suspended him. This has drawn widespread political backlash and raised serious questions about the role of the police leadership in the state.
Viral Video Reaction Prompted Immediate Action
On Monday, multiple unverified video clips and audio recordings appeared online. It claimed to show K Ramachandra Rao engaging in sexually suggestive conduct with women in his office. The videos were disseminated quickly across various social media platforms. This resulted in outrage from the public and heightened scrutiny of the videos.
A suspension notice was subsequently released by the state government stating that Rao’s actions were deemed to be “obscene” and “inappropriate” for a government official. Thereby causing embarrassment to the government. In addition, the government has indicated that they are awaiting a full investigation before taking further disciplinary action against him.
As part of the suspension, Rao has been instructed not to leave the police headquarters for any reason. Unless he has received written permission from the state government.
Official Suspension Order Declaration Breach of Service Regulations
According to the suspension notice issued to Rao, the alleged conduct of Rao was a direct violation of the existing service regulations applicable to senior government employees.
The inquiry will ensure the videos’ authenticity and shall determine whether his conduct constitutes a violation of the service rules governing misconduct.
Given the scale of the event and the sensitive position Rao occupies, the event has sparked an undeniable level of interest within both the political and administrative worlds of Karnataka.
Denials of Accuracy by Rao-Claims Videos are ‘Fabricated’
K Ramachandra Rao has explicitly refuted every allegation. Asserting that the videos in question are “groundless, false and manufactured” and has commented on his astonishment over their appearance. Rao remarked to reporters that he was completely unaware of their existence and where they originated from.
“Today’s technology has made it possible for anything to happen. It has been many years since this happened. I am unaware of how or when or by whom it was done,” said Rao. On being asked whether the recorded videos remain from when he was stationed in Belagavi. He informed that if the date was accurate then they would be from approximately 8 years ago.
While attempting to speak to Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara Monday, it seems there was a lack of communication as he was unable to secure a meeting.
Response from the Government and Other Political Parties
In response to the recent news updates of the issue Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah commented on behalf of the government stating that no person regardless of his status is above the law.
If following fully appreciated an inquiry, if Rao is found guilty, he can expect harsh consequences.
An incident involving K Ramachandra Rao is drawing negative public attention again, with Senior BJP Leader S. Suresh Kumar condemning the incident as “shameless, unjustifiable that tarnished the reputation of the entire police organization.” The Senior BJP Leader stated that the actions of Rao demonstrate how the actions of an officer. Particularly one in the rank of a Senior Officer, will reduce the public confidence of the citizens towards the law enforcement agencies.
A Look Back At The Troubles Of R. K. Rao
This is not the first time K. Ramachandra Rao has been in the public spotlight. He was previously accused of assisting his stepdaughter, Ranya Rao, a film actress, when she was arrested for gold smuggling, to circumvent customs. He helped to arrange for her to avoid customs by having a official escort.
Public pressure caused Rao to be put on leave in March, when Rao was serving as CMD of Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation. When an investigation was completed Rao returned in August as DGP of Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement.
Going Forward
The termination of this case will be a pivotal moment for Karnataka police management and the outcome of the current investigation will affect much more than simply the future career of K. Ramachandra Rao and the loss of public confidence in government.
