This killed an estimated 235 people and injuring over 4300 others. Also, leaving thousands of others missing due to rescue efforts continuing to search through collapsed buildings and destruction around the impacted area.
The dual earthquakes started on June 24. It was with the first seismological event having been at a Magnitude (scaled) of anywhere between 7.2 -7.5. These hit approximately one minute apart from one another. In the immediate vicinity of the country’s northern Caribbean coastline just to the West of Caracas. The impact of the dual earthquakes on the coastal area of La Guaira has resulted in the most significant damage with destroyed homes, hospitals and public buildings. The area’s international airport sustained substantial damages and was closed temporarily until the completed damage assessment is provided. This has impeded efforts to locate missing persons/ restore services and relief operations.
Rescue Efforts The Emergency Response
Teams are conducting search and rescue operations for survivors trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings. Rescue teams are aided by international humanitarian organizations. “The President is requesting those agencies to assist in providing the businesses of the region with heavy machinery to expedite the rescue effort”.
There are many terrible pictures coming out of the impacted areas with families searching for their missing loved ones. Many volunteers and locals are sifting through the rubble in the search for survivors. Also, many survivors have had to sleep outside in parks and other public places out of fear of aftershocks and other buildings falling.
Countries around the world are beginning to deliver humanitarian aid with countries such as the U.S., Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Spain, Portugal and Qatar. They are providing equipment such as medical supplies, rescue teams, drones, water treatment systems and emergency responders.
In addition to the above countries providing aid to the affected areas, The U.S. Treasury has announced a temporary suspension of certain sanctions until October 23, 2018. In order to provide assistance for earthquake relief efforts, while the United Nations has called for increased communication access. It is to allow the affected villages to obtain the needed emergency information.
Infrastructure and Communication Disrupted
Power outages have occurred due to the earthquakes throughout many communities. The mobile service providers have ceased services in affected areas. Metro operations have stopped in affected areas and schools have closed throughout many affected communities. Many schools across various communities are in the process of being converted into shelters and donation locations for families displaced by the earthquakes.
Officials have established a $200 million fund for the rebuilding of homes, healthcare facilities and public infrastructure that has been destroyed.
Painfully, the number of casualties will grow as search and rescue operations are still underway. Many more still have not been found. The recent news updates from agencies around the world say that teams of emergency responders have been focused. It is on recovering and rescuing people as new supplies of supplies from around the world arrive at the damaged areas.
