Nepal Flash Floods: 36 Hours of Survival, Family Still Missing

One of the saddest stories from the Nepal’s devastating flash floods is that of Jay Krishna Gunnam. A 37-year-old engineer from Orissa who managed to get out of the flood areas just by minutes after his office had summoned him. While he was able to save himself. Tragically his wife as well as his small daughter got swept away by the flood. The story has become such a heart-wrenching news from Nepal’s flood disaster.

A Job Call Saved an Engineer

Earlier in the day, Jay Krishna was working with the Upper Trishuli Hydropower Project in Nepal. On Wednesday morning he left his company accommodation at around 7:30 AM in order to reach home around 9 AM for breakfast. However, once he reached the site his office ordered him to go to check the tunnel located at higher altitude.

Together with a couple of his colleagues they were working inside the tunnel. When suddenly they heard a huge explosion followed by floodwaters rushing into the tunnel. The group climbed up to the safe area about 40 meters over the water which saved their lives.

Family Swept Away by Flood

That was when Jay Krishna from the safe spot witnessed unbelievable devastation. According to his words, the workshop, the housing estate, and the buildings adjacent to it were destroyed in seconds, demolished by debris and flood. At that time, his wife Sai Bindu and their 2-year-old daughter were in their house. There were attempts to rescue them, but in vain. Neither his wife nor daughter has been found. Jay Krishna is still keeping his fingers crossed.

Thirty Six Hours Without Food and Water

Jay Krishna and his teammates were trapped in a mountain area for 36 hours without food and water. After this they were rescued by a helicopter and brought to Kathmandu. Now he is staying in a hotel in the capital city of Nepal and is waiting for the help from the Indian Embassy to prepare new documents as all his personal possessions were lost in the flood.
He said that the victims are suffering greatly because they do not know the fate of their relatives.

A Father’s Emotional Appeal

Speaking about his daughter, Jay Krishna said that she was the “light of his life” and he still hopes that she is alive.
He stated that his wife is someone who never made complaints and said that he could not possibly have thought of losing the entire family due to tragedy.

A Family in Odisha Waits for Going Miracle

Jay Krishna moved from Bargarh, Odisha to Nepal in 2019 to work there and got married to Sai Bindu in 2023.
His brother-in-law Venktesh said that the family is praying constantly for the recovery of Sai Bindu and the infant. He described their event as too cruel and said it is not easy for family to cope with the loss.

Nevertheless the rescue operations continue in Nepal, this story becomes one of the most sensational recent news updates and shows the extent of suffering from the flash floods.
