Dia Mirza’s video has recently attracted political controversy. It was after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) removed it from its environmentally friendly Diwali campaign. This was due to complaints from Mumbai BJP President, Ameet Satam.
The video was part of a public awareness initiative educating the public on how to celebrate Diwali responsibly without causing an excess of harmful noise and air pollution.
Why Was Dia Mirza’s Video Removed?
The BMC’s initiative for an eco-friendly Diwali involved organizing a video with several different celebrities such as Ajinkya Rahane, Madhuri Dixit, Nishigandha Wad and Dia Mira.
However, Satam criticized the actress through a post on X. There he stated, “We don’t need advice from @deespeak on how to celebrate Diwali. Our traditions are part of our culture.”
Following his objection, BMC removed Mirza’s video from social media. Even though videos with others remained online. Satam, later on, noted that he had not called for the removal of the video. But he had made allegations against Mirza due to her “work” and comments on some matters in the public domain.
Dia Mirza Addresses the Issue
In light of the occurrence, Mirza expressed her regret through social networking platforms by stating that she was not compensated for being a part of the campaign. Mayor Ritu Tawde condemned the actress and called her anti-Hindu, claiming that she has been banned. The issue has also faced criticism from political leaders. Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh raised concern regarding the removal of Mirza’s video even when other messages sent by celebrities are still available on the civic body’s platforms.
A Conversation Beyond Bollywood
The incident has raised questions regarding the role of celebrity within public awareness campaigns while also bringing to question the selective removal of social media posts.
