Raghav Chadha Voter ID Marked ‘Shifted’
Raghav Chadha, MP of Rajya Sabha, has accused political revenge. It was after his name was marked as “permanently shifted” in Punjab draft electoral rolls. This is compiled through Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process by Election Commission. He has questioned how his name can be moved when his name is still registered as a voter in Mohali.
Chadha Questions Electoral Roll Classification
Rajya Sabha member from Punjab in 2022 and later a member of BJP, Chadha said this has been more than a mere mistake. He also referred to the guidelines of SIR of Election Commission. Especially the clauses related to public representatives.
Chadha has pointed out that the guidelines include a “protected list” of public representatives like MPs and MLAs. He pointed that his name should have remained part of the draft electoral roll as the process of verifying and taking claims was underway.
He has alleged that some Punjab government officials might be acting under political pressure in transfer, posting of government officials and tip-in administration.
AAP Refutes Allegations
The Aam Aadmi Party has rejected all allegations made by Chadha. It mentioned that the Punjab government has no role in forming or changing the electoral rolls.
The party further stated that the SIR exercise is undertaken by the Election Commission and complained about Chadha living in Delhi. So, the question of whether his voter registration can be maintained or changed. Furthermore, it alleged that he was trying to get registered as a voter in the Rajinder Nagar locality in Delhi by using a dubious method.
The AAP added that they will take steps if the BJP or anyone else is found supporting any backward or illegal process.
More than 20 lakh names were removed from the draft list in Punjab
The issue of background work in SIR comes into play. With the report indicating that more than 20.66 lakh names were eliminated from the draft list for the elections. The eliminated names are mostly for voters who are reported to be dead, shifted permanently, not traceable or duplicates.
The period for filing claims and objections started on August 13. It would continue until September 12. This will give the affected voters time to apply for corrections and reinstatement of names. The conflict concerning Chadha has thus emerged as a significant recent news updates highlight. It is regarding Punjab’s electoral roll revision. Therefore, with each side offering distinctly contrasting justifications for his omission from the draft list.
