Houthis Claim Responsibility for Missile and Drone Strikes
According to the Houthis movement in Yemen, they are responsible for all the attacks in question. They claimed that they performed missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia in the last 24 hours.
The movement also said they attacked oil facilities and Dammam Airport in eastern Saudi Arabia. Brigadier General Yahya Saree, the military spokesman warned that there could be more military actions carried out in Saudi Arabia with airports making an important target, but with the only exit of Mecca and Medina airports.
Saudi military spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki stated that air defenses intercepted a missile close to Riyadh airport as authorities reacted to blaze triggered by the projectile.
Global Response and Travel Warnings
The rise of violence has caused international concern. President Trump stated that the U.S. is considering military action against the Houthis. At the same time, the Defence Minister of the U.K. Wes Streeting announced that Britain is willing to provide additional help to Saudi Arabia.
Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, condemned the attacks and confirmed that an American was killed in the latest exchanges. The Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia has reported that an Indian man received injuries in earlier strikes that resulted in his death.
The British foreign office recommended avoiding the travel to some regions of Saudi Arabia, particularly to those located within the 10 kilometers from the border with Yemen. Multiple other Western embassies issued travel warnings for the region.
Yemen Conflict Brings Additional Tensions
The previous attacks receive a background of intensified fighting between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. The group referred to Saudi government support for the internationally recognized government of Yemen and also spoke about a possible air strike made by Saudi forces on Sanaa international airport.
Saudi Arabia has yet to validate these claims, and independent confirmation is still lacking. With escalating tensions, recent news updates highlight developments that are a significant concern, raising issues regarding regional security, civilian casualties, and the risk of conflict expansion.
