Following the appeal by the Chicago attackers, Mumbai attacks accused Rana will now contest his extradition to India before the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court Denies Rana’s Appeal

A 64-year-old Pakistani businessman, presently detained in a Los Angeles facility, is connected to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist David Headley. He is a main suspect in the Mumbai attacks of 2008. On March 6, US Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan declined to issue an Emergency Application for Stay, which aimed to suspend any extradition. US President Donald Trump recently backed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this extradition process.

Rana’s Argument Against Extradition

Rana made allegations regarding his extradition violating US domestic law and extradition. This was in compliance with the UN Convention Against Torture. Taking into consideration his background as a Muslim of Pakistani descent, he has a significant risk of being tortured if sent back to India, he claimed. However, US officials rejected his fears. They did so by pointing out that what was in store for him was going back to face justice for his crimes. Rana was wanted for aiding and abetting the 2008 deadly Mumbai terror attacks. In these attacks 166 victims lost their lives. Extradition for the same was being pursued by Indian investigative agencies since forever.

Following the ruling by the Supreme Court, India is likely to take custody of Rana in the coming days. Stay in touch for the recent news updates regarding this developing news story.
