Monsoon 2025 India

Maharashtra experienced disruption as it welcomed the arrival of the southwest monsoon, rather dramatically. Early, on Sunday, May 25, 2025, barely a day after it arrived in Kerala, as noted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This start is significant because with an arrival date of May 25, 2025. It is the earliest arrival of the southwest monsoon in Maharashtra in 35 years. The last early arrival was on May 20, 1990.

Emergence of the southwest monsoon in Maharashtra is not just an annual event, but it is a strong signal in the larger context of climate trajectories and farming regimes. Ranking right up there among the most important recent updates for billions of individuals in India.

An Unusual Initial Arrival

The early arrival was indicated as being only similar to the monsoon season of 1990, according to IMD scientist Sushma Nair. The southwest monsoon traditionally comes to Maharashtra around June 7 and Mumbai about June 11 – now. At the earlier onset of the rains, both relief and consternation have been felt throughout the state in many regions of the state.

The early arrival in Kerala on May 24th was the earliest arrival since 2009 for the state. Many meteorologists, policy planners, and users across the basin are surprised to see the southwest monsoon so quickly head into Maharashtra.

Where Did the Monsoon Chiefly Arrive?

Per the IMD, The southwest monsoon has advanced into:

  • Parts of Maharashtra, notably the Konkan region
  • The central Arabian Sea
  • All of Goa
  • An extensive region in Karnataka
  • Several states in the northern Bay of Bengal, and
  • Many regions in the Northeast, to include Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland.

Overall, initial official reports suggest that the current monsoon northern boundary runs through Devgad, Belagavi, Haveri, Mandya, Dharmapuri, Chennai, Aizawl, and Kohima.

Rainfall warnings and Flood alerts

The IMD has issued warnings indicating heavy rainfall on several areas:

  • It is currently heavy with rain in Kozhikode and Wayanad in Kerala, and the IMD has issued a red alert
  • Eight different districts, in Telangana also have a heightened alarm on May 26.
  • Mumbai and Coastal Maharashtra has heavy pre-monsoon rain as of Friday, and expected to get worse for the next couple days.

Further, Meteorologist are saying there is likely to continue to have active monsoon situation, for at least until June 2, and should allow more progression into Mumbai, Bengaluru, Tamil Nadu,Andhra Pradesh, and the remaining Northeastern states.

What Does It Mean For The Season?

While early rains may aid in water storage and preparation for agricultural sowing, experts caution that an early onset does not guarantee an increase in water levels over the season.

Monsoon expert and former Secretary in Earth Sciences M. Rajeevan said, “An early onset affects large areas on the first day is not an uncommon occurrence.” Similar to this was the case in 1971 with Karnataka and Maharashtra. “At this point, overall rainfall, and distribution of rainfall over the season will really matter.”

With their agricultural plans disrupted by the uncharacteristic monsoon time line, farmers, city planners, and disaster management offices are now on high alert to adapt quickly.

Climate Monitoring – A Changing Trend

Due to increasing concerns over climate changes this year, the unusual pace of the monsoon is being closely monitored. Even though India is highly reliant on the southwest monsoon for both its means of agriculture and supply of water, these unpredictable shifts can create opportunities and challenges.

Recent reports in the media highlighting chaotic weather across Asia has also encouraged climate scientists to suggest better forecast systems, adaptive farming methods, and enhanced urban flood prevention infrastructure.

Conclusion

The 2025 monsoon season is here, with the arrival earlier than we expected. It brings mixed feelings of optimism and fear. As the state of Maharashtra and neighboring states prepare for the onset of higher amounts of rainfall, people involved in agriculture, urban planning and disaster management will be watching the weather closely over the next weeks.
