Kerala Renamed Keralam: Amit Shah to Table Bill

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to introduce two important bills in the Lok Sabha on Monday. One which seeks to change the name of Kerala to Keralam. Another that proposes to raise the funding powers of the National Co-operative Development Corporation (NCDC). The recent news updates come amid the political turmoil during the Monsoon Session, as per reports.

Name change bill for Kerala

According to the Kerala (Change of Name) Bill, 2026, the First Schedule of the Constitution should be amended for changing the name of Kerala to Keralam.

The bill has been put forth following the resolution of the Kerala Assembly seeking the change. The bill has been approved by the Union Cabinet which has allowed it a place in the Parliament. If it is approved by the Parliament, Keralam will become the new name for the state.

NCDC Bill proposes increase in loaning powers

The second bill is the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026. It proposes significant changes in the loaning capacity of NCDC. This bill will allow the NCDC to provide loans and grants to the cooperative societies as well as those engaged in cooperative development.

The union could also put money into the shares of eligible enterprises subject to approval by the Centre. The government claims there have been advancements in the cooperative industry of India. This led to the establishment of numerous statutory and governing agencies and organizations that provide infrastructure, technical and processing, marketing and financial aid to cooperatives.

Modification proposals

Legal expert L Viswanathan points out that the expansion of terminology does not mean that all organizations may qualify for NCDC funding. The determination must be based on if the organization engages in cooperative development workflow.
There are provisions about auditing, reporting, and governmental permission on these investments.

Opposition calls for Amit Shah’s comment

The legislation is proposed amid disputes between government and opposition politicians who are calling on Amit Shah to comment on the case of excessive police behavior during student protests that occurred on July 20.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh likened the request to the Opposition’s previous demand for a statement from the Home Minister after the Parliament security incident in December 2023.

As the Monsoon Session nears its end, the anticipated legislation and ongoing political impasse are likely to maintain Parliament’s attention.
