Cyclone Montha Tracking: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) raised a red alert for several districts in Andhra Pradesh. This is done as Cyclone Montha developed in the Bay of Bengal. The storm is currently referred to as a cyclonic storm. It is forecast to develop into a very severe cyclonic storm on October 28. This is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to areas of the eastern coast.
Cyclone Montha Expected to Intensify Further
In a recent bulletin issued by IMD, they said that Cyclone Montha is expected to have sustained wind speeds of 90-100 kmph, with gusts reaching 110 kmph. Also, the storm is predicted to cross land near Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, in the evening or night of October 28. It is dependent on the continued north-northwest movement of Cyclone Montha.

Alerts Issued
Red alerts (the highest level of alert) were issued several districts of Andhra Pradesh. It included Kakinada, Kona Seema, Eluru, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Baptala, Prakasam, and SPSR Nellore.
Forecasts for these areas included rain, strong winds and flooding.
An orange alert was issued for some other regions of Andhra Pradesh. This included Odisha and Tamil Nadu, as more areas were alerted, showing the cyclone’s approach (coastal alerts) including Chennai, Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts of Tamil Nadu are under threat of the cyclone.
School Closure
In Andhra Pradesh districts of Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle and West Godavari have reported school closure for two days due to cyclone threat. Local officials are closely monitoring the storm track. Also, they will provide emergency shelters, evacuation plans, and relief teams as necessary.
Disaster teams have been placed in coastal areas of possible impact. While locals are encouraged not to travel unless necessary and to remain indoors.

Officials from the State and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are working closely with IMD to work to mitigate the hazards. Relief materials have been stockpiled. The command posts are to be opened at pre-established locations on the coast.
