TV star Dipika Kakar has been open about battling stage 2 liver cancer. News that has again put a spotlight on one of the deadliest and most frequently misdiagnosed cancers. With her fans and fellow stars rallying behind her, the revelation has been a major story in health news across India.
A Personal Story with Public Impact
Dipika Kakar, who is most recognized for her roles in Hindi TV serials and as the winner of Bigg Boss 12, recently made a post with her husband revealing her diagnosis. The couple stated that there was a tumour in her liver the size of a tennis ball. They confirmed that it is malignant.
Her decision to talk openly about her situation has generated public discussion surrounding liver cancer. It is often refered to as a “silent killer” by doctors. It presents with vague and often uninspiring symptoms.
The Risks of Liver Cancer
According to the World Health Organization, liver cancer is the 6th most common cancer worldwide and 3rd for cancer mortality. In India, liver cancer is the 11th most prevalent, however, it ushered in more than 38,000 new cases in 2020, with liver cancer responsible for more than 36,000 deaths in the same year.
The challenge lies in recognizing patients. Symptoms of liver cancer frequently remain unrecognized, and mild abdominal discomfort, fatigue, or weight changes readily become attributed to co-morbid conditions- in particular, alcohol misuse. This is especially concerning for people who are already living with chronic liver illnesses, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis.
What does Stage 2 liver cancer mean?
For Dipika, stage 2 liver cancer means the cancer is still mostly encapsulated in the liver, but may have now begun to invade vessels around it. Dr. Shaleen Agarwal, a liver transplant surgeon at Amrita Hospital, said this stage means that the cancer can be either:
- One mass between 2–5 cm, or
- 2 to 3 masses, each less than 3 cm,
- No spread to lymph nodes or distant organs.
Dr. Vikram Raut of Fortis Hospitals Mumbai, explained that the liver’s ability to function even with part of it damaged becomes a disguise for the initial growth of tumors. “The liver is very resilient and can compensate for injury until it is very advanced,” he said.
Treatment for Stage 2 Liver Cancer
Most times stage 2 liver cancer can still be treated with curative intent. Dr. Agarwal explained that there are several treatment options:
- Surgical resection: remove the tumour if there is enough liver function and the tumour is accessible.
- TACE (Transarterial Chemoembolization): Directly delivers chemotherapy to the tumor while simultaneously blocking its blood supply.
- TARE (Transarterial Radioembolization): A similar technique using radioactive beads.
- RFA (Radiofrequency Ablation): Destroys cancer cells using heat, especially when surgical treatment is not an option.
These techniques aim to manage tumor growth, improve symptoms, and maximize survival.
The Science Behind the Developments of Liver Cancer
Phase 2 is an important point. According to Dr. Rajesh Shinde from Apollo Cancer Centres, liver cancer may progress internally even if it does not spread outside of the liver. “Tumour cells are developing.” It is possible for some to develop more quickly or resist treatment. “That’s why monitoring and acting quickly is important,” he said.
This point brings into focus the importance of treatment; however, the potential for ongoing monitoring and flexible treatment plans.
The Importance of Early Detection
Health organizations are recommending regular liver screening for those at high risk — a history of hepatitis B or C, high alcohol consumption, and fatty liver disease.
Ultrasound scans and an AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) blood test can be used for screening. However, access and education remain barriers.
Dipika’s story highlights that even young, apparently healthy people are not invincible; however, her courageous decision to share her experience could motivate more people to so something about their health, and also motivate a change towards more proactive approaches in preventative health care.
A Health News Alert
While Dipika Kakar faces her battle with courage and honesty, her diagnosis has become a health news milestone for awareness, empathy, and preventive health measures. Liver cancer may seem silent but one conversation at a time can help eliminate this silence.
