Rekha Love Life: Scandal, Silence & Superstar Mystique
In an industry where secrets are hard to keep, there are still tales from Bollywood’s past that are rather juicy. Especially stories that involve legends, like Rekha and Kamal Haasan. These days, people are more likely to be skeptical about the rumors that circulate around celebrities. Long before the internet fueled rumors about India’s most popular stars, an undercover affair between the two became one of the most talked about “what-ifs” in Indian film history. The idiom, “starting a new chapter,” can easily be applied to rekindling tales from the past. The resurgence of an old hotel episode spurred Jalsha to push the envelope and look into Rekha a bit more. George’s original notion of what could have been a real relationship—though it certainly intrigued many.
Rekha and Kamal: The Unlikely Pair
It was 1981. Rekha was riding high with the success of Silsila. While Kamal Haasan was quickly rising in prominence in Indian film, especially in Tamil cinema. The two were working on a project called Meendum Kokila, while Sridevi was in the mix too. According to reports, it’s during this movie shoot that the connection sparked between Rekha and Kamal.
This alleged closeness caused even more controversy since Kamal was married at the time to Vani Ganapathy, a classical dancer. They had been married in 1978 but what would seem to have been considered a precarious front. This supposed closeness or dalliance between Kamal and Rekha, real or perceived; only added fuel to the fire.
The hotel event that helped trigger the speculations
The most publicized incident in this rumored relationship happened at Chennai’s Hotel Chola Sheraton. The Rediff journalist described how Vani Ganapathy apparently found her husband Kamal Haasan in Rekha’s hotel room, causing a public altercation.
“Towards the end of 1979, I was working at the Chola Sheraton Hotel in Chennai.” “One evening I walked into a scene of chaos.” the journalist recalled. The girls on reception said that Kamal Haasan and Rekha Ganesan were hiding in Rekha’s room and that Vani, Kamal’s then wife, had stormed in and publicly chastised her husband!
None of the principals in the story have made a statement about it, but the story has lingered on the underground Bollywood gossip scene.
The fallout and aftermath
The fallout was serious and immediate. Rekha was apparently dropped from Meendum Kokila and the role was handed to Malayalam actress Deepa (aka Unni Mary). Rekha never made comment on the rumors but the fact that she left the film only continued the speculation.
Kamal’s connection with Vani Ganapathy endured for a few additional years but eventually ended in a divorce in 1988. By that time, Kamal was already in a relationship with actress Sarika, which he was allegedly having at the time of the filming of Raja Paarvai. Their romance grew and it was said that Sarika was pregnant prior to their 1988 wedding – the same year he was finished with his divorce.
Kamal and Sarika had two daughters Shruti and Akshara Haasan, who are both active in the entertainment business today. Still, that relationship ended in a break-up in 2004.
Rekha’s Secretiveness and Permanent Mystery
Rekha has always been mysterious — elegant, quiet, and incredibly protective over her personal life. Rekha, regardless of the much-discussed romance with Amitabh Bachchan, and this less publicly-covered relationship with Kamal Haasan, has rarely confirmed, or denied, any rumoured romance surrounding her.
When it comes to today’s stars, many prefer to openly detail their private lives through social media. Rekha belonged to a time when mystery, not revelation, added to her mystique. That mystique still has a lasting impact on the public and the press, especially when stories like this one pop up.
