Sonam Wangchuk Detained

The detention of activist Sonam Wangchuk, along with 120 other protesters from Ladakh, has sparked major political backlash. The group was peacefully marching to the capital, calling for Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh. This status would grant the region legislative powers, protecting its land and cultural identity.

Why Was Sonam Wangchuk Detained?

On September 1, Sonam Wangchuk and fellow activists began their peaceful march from Leh to New Delhi, urging the central government to hold talks. Their main demand is to have Ladakh included under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. However, as the group neared the Delhi border on Monday, police detained around 120 protesters, citing restrictions in place until October 5.

Political Leaders Respond

Opposition leaders were quick to react. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi criticized the detention, calling it “unacceptable.” He further slammed the central government for silencing peaceful protesters who are advocating for Ladakh’s future. Similarly, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) condemned the police curfew, labeling it “very bad.”

What Are the Protesters’ Key Demands?

Led by Sonam Wangchuk, the protesters are demanding Ladakh’s inclusion under the Sixth Schedule to safeguard local culture and land rights. Additionally, they seek separate Lok Sabha seats for the Leh and Kargil districts, which they believe will ensure fair representation for the region.
